Paying for goods and services with Mpesa is a convenient and widely accepted method of transaction in Kenya. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it:

1. Confirm the Merchant Accepts Mpesa: Before attempting to pay with Mpesa, ensure that the merchant or service provider accepts Mpesa payments. Look for the “Lipa Na Mpesa” or “Pay with Mpesa” sign at the point of sale or inquire with the merchant directly.

2. Calculate the Payment Amount: Determine the total amount you need to pay for the goods or services you wish to purchase. Be sure to include any applicable taxes or fees.

3. Go to Mpesa Menu on Your Mobile Phone: On your mobile phone, dial the Mpesa shortcode: *150# and press the call or send button. A menu will appear on your screen.

4. Choose “Lipa Na Mpesa” Option: Select the “Lipa Na Mpesa” or “Pay Bill” option from the Mpesa menu. This option is used for paying businesses and services registered under the Lipa Na Mpesa platform.

5. Enter the Business Number: Enter the unique business number assigned to the merchant or service provider you are paying. You can find this number on the merchant’s payment instructions or promotional materials.

6. Enter the Account Number (Optional): In some cases, the merchant may require you to enter an account number or reference number. If necessary, input the relevant information as provided by the merchant.

7. Enter the Payment Amount: Key in the amount you want to pay for the goods or services.

8. Enter Your Mpesa PIN: To confirm the payment, enter your Mpesa PIN when prompted. Ensure you keep your PIN confidential and avoid sharing it with anyone.

9. Confirm the Payment Details: Double-check the payment details displayed on your screen, including the business name, account number (if applicable), and the payment amount. Confirm that the information is accurate before proceeding.

10. Complete the Transaction: Once you are satisfied with the details, press the “Send” or “OK” button to complete the transaction. You will receive a confirmation SMS from Mpesa, indicating that the payment has been successful.

Note: Some merchants may also have a “Till Number” option for payments instead of a “Pay Bill” option. The process is similar, where you enter the unique Till Number instead of a Business Number.

With Mpesa’s seamless payment process, you can conveniently pay for goods and services at various retail outlets, restaurants, supermarkets, and even online stores, making it a popular choice for cashless transactions in Kenya.
