NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 3 – Kenya has been hailed as a continental chief in climate-smart agriculture by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), which spotlights the nation’s regenerative farming efforts in its 2024 Annual Report.

The report attributes Kenya’s success to a robust multi-stakeholder method that’s remodeling dryland agriculture and strengthening meals safety for smallholder farmers. Through the Sustainable Transitioning of Agriculture for Resilient and Adaptable Kenya (STRAK) venture, Kenya has made important strides in climate-smart agriculture.

Implemented in partnership with the IKEA Foundation, Kenya’s Ministry of Agriculture, the Cereal Growers Association, Farm Africa, and CIFOR World Agroforestry, the STRAK venture is energetic throughout Embu, Makueni, Tharaka Nithi, and Kitui counties.

“More than 90% of surveyed farmers in the region are now practicing regenerative methods,” the report notes, citing adoption of practices similar to mulching, microdosing, and use of natural manure.

In Tharaka Nithi, these practices practically tripled sorghum yields in comparison with conventional methods, whereas in Kitui, returns on funding reached Sh5.27 for each KES 1 spent.

Kenya’s progress can also be attributed to enabling insurance policies at each nationwide and county ranges. In 2024, the federal government built-in regenerative agriculture into broader local weather motion and improvement methods and took steps to handle double taxation and commerce limitations, boosting market effectivity.

AGRA President Alice Ruhweza, who assumed the function in 2024, praised the nation’s progress and affirmed the group’s dedication to supporting government-led options.
