Buruburu Residents Blame Nairobi County for Forceful Evictions Despite Rent Payments

Tenants from Buruburu Estate in Nairobi County have blamed the county management for allegedly sending goons to forcefully evict them from the county-owned homes regardless of settling lease arrears.

Speaking on Friday, the residents revealed that the evictions started earlier this week, leaving dozens of households stranded, with their private belongings thrown out, embezzled, and broken whereas they watched helplessly.

According to the residents, goons posing as county officers broke into their homes, looted their valuables, and even went to the acute of carrying their garments and parading across the estates.

“I had simply left City Hall after I acquired a name. By the time I returned, my home had been damaged into, my baggage taken, and strangers have been strolling round with my garments. I had already paid my lease, and I dont perceive why that is occurring,” one of many residents who has lived within the homes expressed her frustrations.

According to the residents, the county is utilizing intimidation techniques to reclaim the homes. Most of them have decried foul play, alleging that regardless of paying the rents, they’re nonetheless being pressured out.

Several tenants say they weren’t served with formal notices and have been caught off guard by the sudden operation.

Efforts to hunt assist and cease the evictions have additionally remained futile, as property officers and housing officers have reportedly distanced themselves from the operations.

“When we requested the property officer, he mentioned he didn’t know what was occurring. Even the housing director claimed he was at the hours of darkness,” mentioned one other tenant.

The evictions come amidst an ongoing crackdown by Nairobi County because it seeks to get well lease arrears from tenants in county-owned estates. So far, the evictions have been undertaken in Woodley, Kariobangi South, Kariakor, Ngara, Uhuru Estate, New Pumwani, Lumbumba, Maringo, and Ofafa Jericho.
